Sinulog in Panama City

Senior Santo Nino |
What is Sinulog?
Sinulog is a religious dance to honor the Senor Santo Nino or the Infant Jesus. The origin of the
"Sinulog" has never been fully explained to the present day. Some say it is a dance of ritual of pre Spanish origin
and other sources say it is religious dance patterned after the Native Filipinos ceremonial dance.
The Sinulog dancers dance to the rhythmic sound of drums, wearing colorful outfits, offering candles
or flowers, shouting "Pit Senior" before stating their requests or thanks for favors received. "Pit Senior"
is the term used by Filipinos to get the attention of the Infant Jesus. One might say, "Oh Infant Jesus! thank
you for making me walk again." or "Pit Senior! please let me bear a child."
The "Sinulog" is an integral part of the Senior Santo Nino or the Infant Jesus celebration. Everyone
can participate and dance. For the devotees, dancing the Sinulog is a ritual and a part of their devotion to Santo
Nino.
The celebration is held every 3rd Sunday of January at St. Dominic Catholic Church. Please join
us on January 15, 2012 during the 11:45 mass. The 9 day Novena begin on January 6, 2012. Please contact Nora at
258-3432 or St. Dominic at 850-785-4574. Thank you and may our Santo Nino bless you.

In 2001, Remy Zammiello asked Nora Perron to start the "Sinulog". Nora accepted the offer knowing she doesn't
have any knowledge of how the Sinulog is done.
They started with a small group of people praying the 9 Days Novena at their homes followed by
sharing a good meal. The desire of the devotees to continue the religious practise, the celebration was moved to
the Church. The project required a group effort so the Bisayan Connection hosted the event.
Nora and Remy introduced the Sinulog to Ft. Pete of St. Dominic Catholic Church. Tess Leyva became
an instrumental in the formation of the Sinulog. Many of Nora's wonderful friends from different areas of
Panhandle provided her with informations such as book, video tape and music. That was the begining and after
that, everything fell into places and the orgnizing became a breeze. The "Sinulog" dance group was organized and the
devotees are able to continue their devotion to the Infant Jesus, here at St. Dominic.
